Headway Friendship Circle (HFC)

Our organisation started in 1995 with a handful of people, all of whom had a loved one who had sustained a brain injury. We made a point of meeting socially to discuss and mull over the problems we had been experiencing and support each other with sympathy and advice. As the organisation grew and our membership increased it became impossible to meet in our homes because of space constraints. However, it was realised that our members and their families still needed to discuss their problems others who were experiencing similar circumstances. At the same time we found out that families were also very keen to find out more practical advice regarding brain injury in order to be able to better cope and deal with their situation.

A decision was, therefore, made by Headway staff, to continue meeting regularly and introduce guest speakers with a knowledge of TBI (traumatic brain injury). We needed to find a bigger venue in order to accommodate a bigger crowd. We started meeting once a month on a Saturday afternoon at the then Barney Hurwitz Hospital in Auckland Park (now Netcare Rehab).

These meetings were run and organised by Eric Delmont and Ann Coe. Over time, the very popular Headway Friendship Circle (HFC) came into being at our Hyde Park premises. Eric has since retired from Headway Gauteng and our meetings are now in the expert hands of Jann Walker (Hyde Park), Thembela Mbalukwana (Khomelela) and Linda Marais (Soweto). Under their guidance, these gatherings continue to grow and flourish.

HFC takes place on the first Thursday of every month at Hyde Park at 18h00 and at 09h00 on the second Saturday of every month at Khomelela and Soweto  respectively.

HFC provides a valuable forum where problems pertaining to living with an acquired brain injury can be discussed and perhaps solved and it is advised that all our members, especially those that have just joined, make a point of trying to attend.
